Judy found Community Network via Camden Volunteering bureau in December 2015, completed the Telephone Facilitator training in January 2016, and began facilitating a ‘Silver Circle’, run in partnership with The Silver Line, the next month.
“I have always enjoyed working with people and I’m very used to working with groups. I wanted to see if there was anything I could offer. And I think there was a challenge about doing it over the telephone.
I facilitate a mixed group. They are mostly aged in their 80’s and 90’s, with very varied interests. They discuss literature and psychology, or anything that interests them. They are not preoccupied by the minutiae of their illnesses, although as we go along we may learn that someone is immobile or going through a divorce. A lot of them don’t have many other connections so what they seem to value is the opportunity to talk with other people.
It does seem to me that it’s more significant than I might have realised if you are isolated or lonely and things aren’t going well, and physically you are on a downward spiral. I think it’s important that everyone can feel that what they say has value. I think it’s great, I’m incredibly lucky to have this very interested and kind group of people. I so enjoy hearing people getting something out of it. “
